The environment, society and future generations.

That is what matters to us. Not just managing sustainability, but managing sustainably – consistently, holistically and with a view to the future.

The following content from our latest sustainability report documents how we implement this approach in all areas of our value creation: from circular economy and energy and resource efficiency to social responsibility in our region. Our goal is clear: to act in an ecologically safe and socially just manner – today and for a future worth living. Of course, we are not yet where we want to be, but it is a steady journey.

Responsibility
A WE is Stronger than an I

We are convinced that corporate success can no longer be measured in terms of financial profit.

Global issues such as climate change, energy and food security, ever- shorter economic cycles, and demographic change are changing markets and demand patterns and posing major challenges for entrepreneurial action.

Children have a right to expect adults to pay attention to the world they leave them.

Our commitment and dedication to being a leader in sustainability has always been deeply embedded in our corporate values.

Our mission is also to work for a "better world" in general. With outstanding products and performance, we are already on a sustainable course.

Together, we want to do even more for it.

Stefanie Rud

"We are convinced that every human being carries the potential for sustainable innovations within him or her. We would like to highlight this potential and devote all our energy to the future of cleanroom technology based on "nature's example", and to help shape this future sustainably on the basis of sound fundamental research."

Sustainable Development Goals

The United Nations 2030 Agenda, to which all 193 member states committed in 2015, offers a blueprint for peace and prosperity and the survival of our planet Earth.

We want to join this with great ambition. We have chosen specific goals because we are convinced that we can make a contribution here, albeit on a small scale, to a "better world".

Our defined goals 3,4,8,12,13, 15 and 17 combine economic, social and ecological aspects and represent a common basis for a sustainable future. Within the scope of our possibilities, we are doing everything we can to get a good deal closer to these goals.

Our goal: to give more than we take

Where do we stand – and how do we proceed?

Since 2023, regenerative transformation has been one of four key areas of our corporate strategy – and one of three core topics of our Family Advisory Board. In this way, we are anchoring sustainability in our actions for the long term: not as a project or department, but across all areas – in our processes, in our core business and along our entire value chain.

In order to implement sustainability holistically, we created a staff unit for sustainability and ESG in mid-2023. This unit drives the topic forward strategically and accompanies its implementation together with all divisions – step by step.

This means that we want to act more sustainably in all areas and processes – in order to achieve our goal of circular and regenerative business practices.

ESG: ENVIRONMENT – SOCIAL – CORPORATE GOVERNANCE

In order to be able to shape this path in a well-founded manner, it was first necessary to obtain a clear picture of the status quo. That is why, in 2024, we worked with Fraunhofer Austria to calculate our corporate carbon footprint (CCF) for the first time. This involved a double materiality analysis and an initial greenhouse gas balance sheet in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) for the year 2023, followed by a second balance sheet at the beginning of 2025 for the year 2024.

In addition, we analysed our first environmental product footprint (PEF) in 2025 using one of our sluice products as an example. Among other things, this also serves to prepare for a future digital product passport and our further development towards a circular economy.

This means that we now know our impacts and dependencies – and can target the most significant levers. The next step is to underpin our measures with scientifically based targets in order to make sustainability measurable. To this end, we are guided by the Science Based Targets (SBTs).

Unsere ESG-Schwerpunkte im Überblick

Based on our mindset, our values and our attitude, we focus on the three pillars of environment, social issues and governance in order to become regenerative.

SHAPING CHANGE.

OUR DRIVING FORCE: PROFIT FOR PEOPLE & PLANET

As a company, it is essential for us to be economically successful. Only then can we fulfil our ecological and social responsibilities. However, in our opinion, the decisive factor here is that economic success (profit) should not come at any price. And above all, it should not come at the expense of our environment (planet) and others (people – representing all living beings).

An important lever for the success of a regenerative transformation is to move from a linear to a circular economy in the future.

CIRCULAR ECONOMY

What do we mean by this?

For us as a manufacturing company, circular economy means thinking and acting holistically in cycles. Our products have always been designed for durability and resource efficiency.

But circular economy goes further:

it means considering, right from the design and construction stage, how materials can be reused after their initial phase of use – e.g. through reuse, repair, remanufacturing or recycling. Above all, it means asking from the outset: What can we leave out or reduce? (Refuse, Reduce).

For us, circular economy also means developing new business models to offer even more resource-efficient, environmentally friendly products and services – and thus better support our customers in their decarbonisation strategies.

For example, since 2024, we have been further developing our Hook-Up Team with its many years of expertise in ESBS production in the field of clean room and ventilation construction, as well as our competence in the field of decontamination in very specific environments, as part of our own product area ‘Retrofit I Refurbish & Recycling’.

This means that we not only deal with the machines and systems we produce ourselves, but also look beyond our own horizons and take care of the machine and system inventories of other companies in order to return them to the production process as efficiently and comprehensively as possible or to recycle them in the best possible way.

Circular economy can only work together

No one can achieve a circular economy alone. It requires cooperation and co-creation – across industries and sectors. That is why we are specifically looking for like-minded partners and customers to break new ground together and realise projects with a high profile.

Circular economy requires the joint efforts of many stakeholders. It requires rethinking and reimagining. And it requires the courage to break new ground.

DIVERSITY, BALANCE AND SUSTAINABILITY

Our workforce at a glance

The Ortner team comes from many parts of the world and is as diverse as the challenges we face. This means we bring a wide range of perspectives, experiences and skills to the table – making Ortner sustainable, resilient and innovative.

To be precise, in 2024 we employed just under:

  • 200 INDIVIDUALS across 5 GENERATIONS from
  • 19 DIFFERENT COUNTRIES and
  • 4 DIFFERENT CONTINENTS.

We trained 6 APPRENTICES in the following 4 APPRENTICESHIP PROFESSIONS:

  • Operations logistics clerk
  • Office clerk
  • Electrical engineering
  • Metal electronics
  • Europe dominates with 63% of nationalities – a sign of regional roots
  • Asia, South America and Africa are also represented – a strong signal of intercultural openness and global connectivity
  • In total: 19 nationalities from 4 continents – that is diversity in action
  • Our workforce is as international as our markets – with personalities from 5 generations and 19 countries
  • The average age of team leaders is below the Austrian average (43.2 years, Statistics Austria 2024) – a sign of future viability and development potential
  • At 40%, the proportion of women in management is above the industry average (approx. 25% on average, source: WKO 2024).
  • 50% women on the advisory board – a strong signal for strategic equality

RESPONSIBILITY WITH ATTITUDE

For Ortner, good corporate governance is not an abstract concept, but rather a living practice – anchored in the principle of the ‘honourable businessman’ and underpinned by trustworthiness and a clear understanding of values. Our governance structures create transparency, strengthen trust and ensure long-term resilience – increasingly along the entire value chain.

However, we face challenges in this area. From the outset, we have consciously focused on value creation in the region and short supply chains for the central markets. Collecting reliable sustainability data from the upstream supply chain is challenging. But it is important for our decarbonisation and that of our customers and partners. We are therefore doing our utmost to meet this challenge.

UN Global Compact

UN Global Compact

As a participating organisation in the UN Global Compact, the world's largest initiative for responsible corporate governance, we are committed to internationally recognised principles in the areas of human rights, labour standards, the environment and anti-corruption, as well as to the SDGs.

Nachhaltigkeit bei Ortner

Integrity and ethics as a foundation

Ortner was audited and certified for the first time in 2020 by the WEISS Institute for Business Ethics for ‘meaningful social responsibility’ and recertified in 2023. This repeated award underscores our commitment to ethical conduct, social innovation and sustainable corporate governance. This is complemented by our Management Code of Conduct and a comprehensive Employee Handbook, which sets clear standards for ethical behaviour in everyday working life. Where appropriate, these are adapted or expanded to include sustainability aspects in the course of the regenerative transformation.

Qualität und Umweltverantwortung

Certified quality and environmental responsibility

Our management systems are certified according to ISO 9001 (quality) and ISO 14001 (environment). They form the backbone of our continuous improvement – from product development to disposal. For us, governance also means making sustainability measurable and verifiable.

Responsibility in the supply chain

We are committed to partnership-based but increasingly rigorous supply chain management. Our Code of Conduct for Suppliers, standardised self-assessment questionnaires and a multi-stage audit process are designed to ensure that environmental and social standards are upheld throughout the entire chain. The ongoing development of a systematic supplier evaluation system further strengthens this approach. Nevertheless, as an SME, we sometimes deal with suppliers who can only provide limited ESG data. This is a balancing act that will keep us busy in the coming years.

FAZIT UND AUSBLICK

For us, sustainability in the sense of regeneration is not just lip service, but a firmly anchored strategic decision. It is a journey that we have been increasingly embarking on since 2023.

Our goal: to give more than we take.

As a European company, we fully support the goals to which 196 countries around the world committed themselves at the Paris Climate Summit in 2015. And we support the goals of the European Union's ‘Green Deal’. We can still counteract the increasingly noticeable consequences of the climate and biodiversity crisis with courageous measures and change. Or at least not exacerbate them further.

At Ortner, we want to be part of the solution.

Doing Good Together

At Ortner, social responsibility is more than just a concept – it is a central part of our corporate culture. We have long been committed to helping disadvantaged children, young people and adults through various initiatives. Since 2015, we have been focusing on projects that promote education, social participation and better coexistence.

A few examples:

St. Nicholas at SOS Children’s Village
Since 2017, we have been bringing joy to children at the SOS Children‘s Village during the pre-Christmas period. Three of our employees take on the role of Santa Claus and give gifts to the children in the village. Around 80 children currently live in the SOS Children‘s Village in Moosburg in children‘s village families, residential groups and host families. This tradition is particularly close to our hearts, as it not only gives the children material gifts, but above all joy, warmth and the feeling of being seen and appreciated.

Caritas learning café in Spittal/Drau
Education is the key to a better future. That is why we are delighted to be working with strong partners such as the parish of Spittal an der Drau, BKS Bank, the Hasslacher Group, Lindner Recyclingtech, Infineon Austria, the Rotary Club Spittal an der Drau and the Kiwanis Club Spittal an der Drau to make a Caritas learning café in Spittal an der Drau possible. Here, around 20 children and young people from disadvantaged families aged between 6 and 15 currently receive free afternoon and learning support – an important contribution to greater educational justice and equal opportunities. In addition to the immensely important personal support, modern technical equipment is also essential. In December 2024, we were able to donate more than 20 different, fully functional devices to the children at the learning café.

Book sponsorships for children – The travelling book box
Reading – especially at a young age – promotes creativity, vocabulary, literacy and writing skills. Books inspire the imagination and open doors to new worlds. With our book sponsorship, we were supporting the Villach-based start-up Swircle from 2022 to 2024, a „swap circle“ of travelling book boxes that deliver a carefully curated selection of high-quality children‘s books directly to participating families‘ homes every month. We enabled the annual purchase of 250 German and English children‘s books for children aged two to twelve. In this way, we helped to promote the joy of reading (aloud) and improve access to books for children from all social backgrounds.

Cooking for a good cause
Good food means more than just satisfaction – it is also a sign of care and community. That is why we are involved with the railway station mission at Villach Westbahnhof, providing socially disadvantaged people with a warm meal. Whether for people in difficult life situations or socially marginalised groups – here, every meal counts as an expression of humanity.

Ortner summer camps
Since 2021, we have been organising our „Ortner Summer Camps“ for our employees with children as a form of support during the summer holidays. A team of educators takes care of the needs of our employees‘ children in the 5-9 and 10-14 age groups every day for three weeks.

With initiatives like this, we are making small contributions to a more just society. Together with our employees, we are committed to a better future – and we are delighted when we can bring more than just a smile or two to people‘s faces.
